Asphalt Shingle Roofs From Semper Fi

If you drive down just about any street you’re going to see that most of the houses have asphalt shingles on them and that’s been true for a long time now. They do well in the snow and cold plus they hold up to the wind and storms in the summer and the price is a lot easier to deal with than most of the other roofing materials out there. There are also way more colors and styles to choose from than there used to be so finding one that looks right on your house isn’t hard to do.

Semper Fi Roofing & Exteriors got started over 20 years ago with two Marines and one roofing truck and asphalt shingle roofs are what we’ve put on more than anything else since then. We’re veteran owned and our work comes with a lifetime workmanship warranty plus there’s never a charge for the estimate. Get in touch online and we’ll come out and go over everything with you.

The Different Kinds of Asphalt Shingles

3-tab shingles are the flat single layer shingles that are common for older homes in the area. They don’t cost as much as the other two but have a shorter lifespan and are easily picked up by the wind, which is why a lot of people in the area don’t go for them anymore.

Architectural shingles are the popular choice for customers getting a new roof because they’re thicker and have more than one layer. It gives your roof a more textured look, lasts longer than the 3-tab and holds better during storms.

Impact resistant shingles can take a hit from hail without taking a lot of damage. If you’ve already had to file a couple hail claims on your house these are worth asking about and some insurance companies will even take a little off your premium if you have them.

Why So Many People Go With Asphalt

Asphalt shingle roofing is popular because of the lower price point compared to other materials like slate or tile. And when it gets a proper installation you have a good 15 to 30 years depending on what shingles you choose and the airflow in your attic. So for most homeowners it’s the best bang for their buck if they want a long-lasting quality roof.

These shingles also do a good job holding up in the winter time because the shingles handle freeze-thaw cycles well. We put in an ice and water shield during installation to protect against leaks when ice dams push water up under the shingles and into the roof deck.

Choosing Your Color

We’ll bring samples to your home during your free estimate so you can see them up against your own siding and trim to get an actual glimpse of what it’ll look like after installation. We’ll also show you photos of other homes we’ve done with each option so you can have a better idea what the finished product will look like. Darker colors tend to give the house a more modern appearance while lighter ones look more traditional. It ultimately comes down to your preference and what fits the specific look of your home.

How We Put On an Asphalt Roof

We always tear the old roof all the way off down to the boards because that’s the only way to see if any of the decking is soft or rotted and needs to be replaced. Then we put ice and water shield where it’s needed and underlayment over the rest of it plus new flashing around the chimney and vents and anywhere the roof runs into a wall, and after that the shingles go on. Most houses take our crew a day or two and we cover up your bushes and landscaping before anything comes off then clean up at the end of each day, and there’s more about how the whole thing goes on our roof replacement page.

What Changes the Price

The size of your roof is the biggest thing that goes into the cost but how steep it is and how many valleys and dormers and skylights it’s got also makes a difference since those all take more time and material to do right. The type of shingle you pick plays into it too and so does any decking we end up needing to replace once the old roof is off. We’ll go over all of it with you at the estimate so there are no surprises and if you’d rather pay for it over time we have financing options available.

Asphalt Shingle FAQs

How long do asphalt shingles usually last?

Architectural shingles are going to last somewhere around 25 to 30 years most of the time and 3-tab shingles usually get about 15 to 20, but hail and ice dams and an attic that doesn’t vent right can take years off of either one.

Can you put new shingles right over my old ones?

We don’t do that because it adds a lot of extra weight on the roof and covers up any bad decking underneath that really should get fixed before a new roof goes on.

Do you have weekend appointments?

Yes we have weekend availability so you can meet with us without needing to take any time off work.
