Shingle Repair From Semper Fi

When it’s just a few shingles that blew off or cracked or started lifting up then there’s no reason to be talking about a whole new roof yet. Most of the time we can get up there and swap out the bad ones in an hour or two and your roof is good to go for a lot more years, and it keeps the little problem from turning into a leak down the road.

Semper Fi Roofing & Exteriors started out over 20 years ago with two Marines and a truck and we still do a lot of these smaller jobs every week. Our work has a lifetime workmanship warranty on it plus the estimate is free and we have weekend availability if that’s easier for you. Get in touch online and we’ll come take a look.

What We Usually See

Wind is what takes off the most shingles and it’s almost always the ones along the edges or up by the peak where the gusts can get under them. Hail cracks them and knocks the granules off, and a big branch coming down can tear up a few in one spot. Then there are the ones that just let go over time where the seal underneath dried out and now the shingle is flapping around every time the wind picks up.

We also see a lot of nails that worked their way up and poked through the shingle sitting on top of them. It doesn’t look like much from the ground but that’s a hole in your roof and water is going to find it sooner or later.

Don’t Let Broken Shingles Sit There

A lot of people see a couple shingles in the yard after a storm and figure they’ll deal with it later since nothing is leaking. The problem is once a shingle is gone the stuff under it is out there in the sun and rain and it’s not made to take that for very long. Plus a loose shingle gives the wind something to grab so the next storm pulls off the ones next to it too and before you know it the small repair isn’t so small anymore.

Things You Can See From the Yard

You don’t have to go up on the roof to find out if something is wrong and we’d rather you didn’t since it’s easy to slip or crack more shingles walking on them. Take a walk around the house and look for:

  • Shingles lying in the grass
  • Spots that look darker than the rest
  • Edges curling up or sticking out
  • Granules at the bottom of the downspouts

If you see any of that give us a call and we’ll get up there and check it out.

Getting the New Shingles to Match

We’ll try to get the same brand and color that’s already on your roof and if it’s a newer roof that usually isn’t hard to do. Older roofs are a little tougher since the shingles fade in the sun and some colors don’t get made anymore, so we’ll find the closest thing we can and show it to you before it goes on. Any difference you notice at first tends to even out after a season or so of sun.

When It’s More Than a Few Shingles

If a whole side of the roof got torn up in a storm then fixing a few at a time isn’t going to cut it and we’d look at redoing just that section with shingle replacement instead. And if the roof is near 20 years old with shingles cracking and curling all over then patching it is only going to buy you a little time, so we’ll show you the photos and talk with you about a roof replacement if that’s what it needs.

For hail or wind damage call your insurance company first since they might cover the repair, then we’ll take pictures and notes of everything for your adjuster. There’s more about that on our storm damage repair page.

Shingle Repair FAQs

Can I just fix a few shingles myself?

You can but we don’t recommend it because getting up on a roof is dangerous and if the new shingle doesn’t get sealed down right it’s going to blow off again or let water in underneath.

Will you come out for one or two shingles?

Yes we will and we do it all the time since it’s a lot cheaper to fix one missing shingle now than it is to fix a leak and a soggy ceiling later.

How much does it cost to repair shingles?

It depends on how many need fixing and how hard they are to get to but most shingle repairs are on the smaller side and you’ll know the price before we start anything.
